How does the Nito Exam feature work?

Learn about creating exam questions, exam banks, and exams in RapidLMS.

If you require any multiple-choice testing outside of a SCORM package, RapidLMS includes an Nito Exam feature that will help you create questions and exams.

How Does It Work?

Essentially, Nito Exams work by creating exams which pull questions based on rules from one or more exam banks.

Different settings can be applied to the exams in terms of feedback provided to examinees and restrictions on interacting with the exam.

In your RapidLMS account, navigate to the/vnm view (yourstorefront.rapidlms.com/vnm) and "Manage Exams" in the Authoring section of your account.

At the top of the page, click [+ Create an Item Bank].

Enter the owner organization and item bank name.

In the Item Banks tab, click Edit to access the item bank.

Using [+ Click to add a new item] start creating exam questions.

The Stem is the main content that will display on the exam while the Rationale may be viewed on review if the exam allows.

Options are the selectable answers and only one option may be marked as correct.

Labels are important and can be used to set up the rules of the exam and how questions are pulled without creating additional item banks.

For Example

ABC Certification Exam requires 10 questions each from Modules 1, 2 & 3.

We can create an ABC Certification Item Bank and label each question with the appropriate Module.

When creating the exam, we can set the rules to: Select 10 items labeled with Module 1 from the ABC Certification item bank.

If another exam was created that just needed to pull 10 questions from any of Modules 1-3, the rules would omit the label and just select 10 questions from the item bank.

You may enable shuffling of the options, which randomizes the answer order in each instance of the exam.

Finally, [+ Click to add a new option] will add the answers and you can toggle which answer is correct.

Importing Questions to an Item Bank

In your RapidLMS account, navigate to the/vnm view (yourstorefront.rapidlms.com/vnm) and "Manage Exams" in the Authoring section of your account.

Either create a new Item Bank or click Edit on an existing Item Bank.

At the top of the page, click "Import" to open the question importer and drag-and-drop your question spreadsheet.

Note: This includes descriptions and examples, make sure to remove before importing!

The importer will provide a preview of what the questions will look like; make sure that your stem, rationale, and options all look like they're in the correct spot.

Multiple categories can be assigned to questions by adding additional category columns with unique headers:

Category 1, Category 2, Category 3...

When you're ready, click Import and the system will start creating your questions!

Do not click Import more than once - even if RapidLMS seems to be frozen, it's working in the background and clicking Import again may cause duplicates.

The import process will import 4 answers for each question. If a question has more than 4 options, you will need to manually add these in. If a question has less than 4 options (like for True/False) you will need to remove two "undefined" options.

Following the import, you would need to enable shuffling of the options, which randomizes the answer order in each instance of the exam.

Setting Up an Exam

In your RapidLMS account, navigate to the/vnm view (yourstorefront.rapidlms.com/vnm) and "Manage Exams" in the Authoring section of your account.

At the top of the page, click [+ Create an Exam].

Enter the owner organization and exam name.

In the Exams tab, click Edit to access exam.

Click the Settings button at the top of the page to set up your passing grade, whether review is permitted after completion, any time limits (and whether the exam submits automatically on expiry).

You can also include pre-exam details, such as reminders or instructions that will display for learners above the Start Exam button.

Save and click the Rules button at the top of the page.

It is possible to limit the number of attempts on an exam and enforce a waiting period between attempts.

This does require some additional work, so please contact your Account or Customer Success Manager for more details.

Using [+ Click to add a new rule] start adding questions from the item bank(s) to your exam.

Select the item bank, the number of items to include, and any labels that should be applied.

Create a rule for each set of questions from a label or item bank and save.

Items are selected randomly, so if you have 10 items in a bank or label and your exam selects 5, each exam instance will be a little bit different.

Adding an Exam to a RapidLMS Course

In your RapidLMS account, navigate to the/vnm view (yourstorefront.rapidlms.com/vnm) and "Manage Courses" in the Authoring section of your account and click edit for the appropriate course.

At the bottom of the page, click [+ Add Exam] and select the exam that will be included.

Rearrange the order of course items with the arrows on the right of the page.

We encourage you to add the exam to a testing course and ensure that all rules are set up correctly and selecting the correct items.

What Does A Student See with an Exam?

Students will see Exams like any other course item (i.e. title and action button) with one exception: once they've attempted an exam, there will be a Review option is the exam allows.

When clicking into the course item, learners will see any pre-exam content and details on time limits; the exam is launched with a Start Exam button and students must confirm they're ready.

Once the exam launches, a count-down appears at the top if enabled.

Each exam question is on its own page and students can move forward, backwards, or jump to questions using a dropdown menu.

The exam is submitted with a button at the top of the page and students are warned if any questions are unanswered.

Exam results, and review if enabled, are available on submission.
